Artist statement
I struggle to express my identity as a Vietnamese-American woman due to the constant reactions from other folks that my family, friends, and I do not deserve to thrive in the American experience. This struggle also extends towards me thinking that I am not Vietnamese enough due to being exposed to that experience. Through my video art and oil paintings, I navigate through these dilemmas between two distinct identities. My artwork incorporates the practice of spirituality, often found in Vietnamese folk religion, and is synthesized with my experiences growing up in Stafford, VA. This spirituality, although of Vietnamese origin, thrives in the natural environment of the Virginian woodlands. The spirits that roam within the trees and creeks in the Rappahannock area help us cope with all the worries regarding our identities. Especially with my parents, who sought refuge from the Vietnamese Mekong, the Rappahannock spirits remind them of those spirits in their former hometown. They additionally guide us to cope with the trauma experienced by war and refuge.
